Part-Time Technical Director
Job Description:
The Technical Director for Sherman Community Players (Mainstage and Theatricks) works under the direction of the Artistic Director and the Executive Director. This position routinely works weekends and evenings to oversee all technical aspects of productions.
Productions:
- Under the direction of the Artistic Director, designs, builds, and deconstructs sets for all productions.
- Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the Finley Theater and the Honey McGee Playhouse, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
- Attends technical rehearsals to supervise the technical aspects of the show.
Facilities:
- Maintains clean, organized, and safe workspaces.
- Prepares theatre spaces as needed.
- Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Properly maintains and stores tools and equipment.
- Promptly reports safety concerns of technical assets to the Managing Artistic Director.
- Makes recommendations to the Managing Artistic Director or theatre leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
Volunteer Management
- Assists in recruiting and training technical volunteers for individual shows.
- Supervises technical volunteers during set construction/deconstruction, painting, or other set preparation activities.
- Advises directors and designers on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for an individual show, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Five years technical theater experience
- Proven experience in set design, lighting and sound design, and construction
- Knowledge and experience running light and sound boards and sound systems
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift light and heavy objects, climb steps and ladders, move furniture, and perform other work required to build and paint sets, hang lights, etc.
- Problem solving/trouble shooting skills
- The ability to learn and implement new technology quickly
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work or volunteer experience
